Accessibility Gap

It would be a dream to have everyone able to instantaneously obtain information via technology. However, the digital divide would not be an issue if this were to become a reality. Nevertheless the problem lies in terms of accessibility.

  1. Economic
    1. This would be the factor that separates out between rural and urban area.
    2. Spending power and salary earned in rural areas are not as great as those in the cities. As a result of that, technology infrastructure in rural area has been clunky. Even if there were to be a good computer used there, internet connection wouldn't be as responsive as those that are in the city, which poses as a limitation in getting things done.
  2. Generation
    1. Old generations are not able to embrace technology as it is highly technical and complicated which is a deviation from the traditional paper work.
    2. Critiques said that Apple might be attempting to open the technology market to the mass, in other words the older generation by introducing the iPad. It is taunted to be simple, intuitive, and has the power of a computer at a size of a netbook.
  3. Special Needs
    1. Technology has to cater to the mass, even the minority. The problem is that some features are so clunky and user-unfriendly that those that require special needs and the not so savvy were not able to utilize technology at the very best

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.” ~ Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web
