Purpose of Gaming

This section is to talk mainly about the purposes of games aside from entertainment. Games can be used for:

Acquiring or Practicing skills

-There are programs out there like Alice which allows someone to drag and drop items and manipulate those items in an enviornment. The purpose of this program is to interest kids/young adults in programming by teaching them basic programming and logic reasoning skills.

Analyzing situations, Gaining insights, and Recruitment

-This is important because this can be used to see if a person is qualified and contains the necessary skills to do a job. For example, the army has life size simulators they can use for training and in the slides there was mention of flight simulators as well. That can be used to make sure someone fully understands how to fly a plane so they don't crash millions of dollars or worse take lives. Speaking about the army simulators I have actually done one and they are very cool. You get to plan out this mission and then you pick the role you want to play in the simulation, they are pretty in depth and I can easily see how they can be used for training. You can visit this website to learn more about the Army Experience: www.thearmyexperience.com

Planning Ahead

-There were a few places that used simulators to simulate the spread of viruses(H1N1 and others like it). I assume a lot of data collection comes into play when making a simulation of something like this but this can play a major role in understanding what needs to be done in case of emergencies. If a virus could be spread rapidly across a country we would need to have plans and know what to do. You would not want to be stuck in a huge mess when the clock hits zero and its time to get a move on. This is a game that deals with epidemics: www.awfulgames.com/games/pandemic

Serious Gaming

-Games can be very serious and very educational. Children are surrounded by media and play games most of the day anyway so incorporating a learning aspect into what they already do will make for a smarter child. There are already many educational games out there and i believe many more business that cater to bringing knowledge to children will incorporate this aspect into their regimen.
