Since in today's society the internet is so important, it is necessary to understand what the internet is and why there are still problems with it.  It is true that we use the internet for social networking or sending emails, but this is not what the internet is.  The internet is an underlying communication infrastructure.  It consists of many interconnected networks to which new networks can be added at any time.  These networks are connected through routers, and the internet is flexible enough that the routers can accommodate any size or any type of network.

-The internet is a fairly recent technology even though it may seem old to some of us in our generation.  In the late 1960s, the internet appeared to be a single large network.  It was not until 1970 that the internet became a network of networks.  According to Professor Comer, the internet was initially designed for the U.S. Department of Defense.  It was made so that a communication signal could survive a nuclear war and be able to keep in contact with other military branches.  The name for this original internet was called ARPANET.  It was not until later that the internet developed into what it is today.  For how advanced this technology may seem, it has been virtually unchanged since the 1980s.  According to Professor Rud, the website for the college of education was not made until 1995.  This just goes to show how new the internet is.  Because it is still in the early stages, it is one of the reasons why Professor Comer stated that the internet is still in its "Wild West Stage."+The internet is a fairly recent technology even though it may seem old to some of us in our generation. Because it is still in the early stages, it is one of the reasons why Professor Comer stated that the internet is still in its "Wild West Stage."  I believe these lectures covered mainly everything that I wanted to know about the internet and some of its problems.  I would have like to seen the ARPANET discussed more in detail, but that was a subject that was irrelevant to the focus of the lectures.
