Faculty

Dr. Susanne Hambrusch, Computer Science, Home, Email

Dr. Hambrusch is a Professor of Computer Science and the PI of the associated NSF grant “Computer Science Pathways for Educators.” Her research interests include query management in high update database environments, data management and data dissemination in mobile environments, analysis of algorithms, and computer science education. Her recognitions include inaugural membership in the Purdue University Book of Great Teachers, a 2003 Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award from Pennsylvania State University, and 2004 TechPoint Mira Education Award Winner. She served as the head of the Department of Computer Science at Purdue from 2002-2007. She is also the PI of “Science Education in Computational Thinking (SECANT),” a project introducing science majors to computational thinking.

Dr. Christoph Hoffmann, Computer Science, Home, Email

Dr. Hoffmann is a Professor of Computer Science. He has a long history of interdisciplinary collaboration and of introducing novel courses into the CS curriculum. Recently, he developed an undergraduate course on serious games and was recognized for it by a 2008 TechPoint Mira award. Internationally known for his work in geometric computations, he directed an interdisciplinary team of collaborators to scientifically simulate the 9/11 terror attacks. The North Tower simulation in particular has been viewed more than 7 million times on YouTube.

Dr. Tim Korb, Computer Science, Home, Email

Dr. Korb is the Assistant Head of the Computer Science Department. He is responsible for the direction and operation of the departmental computing facilities and is involved in several departmental programs, including K-12 outreach, corporate and alumni relations, and undergraduate scholarships and awards. He has developed and/or taught courses in programming languages, compiler design, and computer networking, and, most recently, co-designed and taught two introductory computing courses.

Dr. James Lehman, Curriculum & Instruction, Home, Email

Dr. Lehman is a Professor of Educational Technology and Associate Dean for Discovery and Faculty Development in the College of Education. From 2002-2009 he served as the head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. His research focuses on the integration of personal computers in education particularly in the sciences, interactive multimedia design, and computer mediated distance education. He is a co-author of Educational Technology for Teaching and Learning. From 2000-04, he served as the PI of a U. S. Department of Education PT3 implementation project at Purdue, which focused on improving the educational technology knowledge and skills of prospective teachers and teacher educators. He is a member of the university's Teaching Academy and was inducted into the inaugural class of its Book of Great Teachers.

Dr. Voicu Popescu, Computer Science, Home, Email

Dr. Popescu is an Associate Professor of Computer Science. His research interests span the areas of computer graphics, visualization, and computer vision. His current research projects develop novel camera models for efficient and effective rendering of complex visual effects, a system for rapid photorealistic 3D modeling of large-scale real-world environments, a system that aims to make distance education an integral but unobtrusive part of on-campus education, and a method for high-fidelity general-purpose-visualization of large-scale computer simulations.

Dr. Aman Yadav, Educational Studies, Home, Email

Dr. Yadav is an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology and Associate Professor of Computer Science (Courtesy) His research focuses on problem-based learning and case-based instruction in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. His work has also involved examining how video case-based hypermedia environment can be used for preservice and inservice teacher preparation and how teacher beliefs influence their pedagogical practices. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and is familiar with CS curricula having taken CS courses on a broad set of topics.

Chris Mayfield, Computer Science, Home, Email

Chris Mayfield is a Ph.D. candidate studying with Prof. Sunil Prabhakar and Prof. Jennifer Neville. His research interests include database systems and statistical learning, uncertain and probabilistic data management, index structures and query optimization, and computer science education. He enjoys teaching programming to K-12 students, and is a Super Saturday course instructor for the Gifted Education Resource Institute at Purdue University.

Lily Wu, Educational Technology, Email

Lily Wu Xuemei is a Ph.D. student of Educational Technology program in the department of Curriculum and Instructional Design. Her research interests include technology-enhanced adult learning, needs analysis, performance improvement intervention selection and evaluation, and cross-discipline collaborative learning. She has been a teaching assistant for EDCI27000 Introduction to Educational Technology for years, and enjoyed the continuous self-improvement in teaching and learning.

Ninger Zhou, Educational Psychology, Email

Ninger Zhou is a Ph.D. student in the department of Educational Studies. Her research interest is in how multimedia and other instructional strategies can enhance students’ interaction and achievements during literacy activities. She is the teaching assistant for EDPS 235 Educational Psychology, which is a required course in block II for the teacher education program.

Evaluator

Dr. Courtney Brown, Project Evaluator, Email

Dr. Brown is a research staff member of the Center for Evaluation & Education Policy at Indiana University. Her past evaluations and research bring a wide-range of experience and expertise to CEEP. She has directed evaluations for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Education, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, community service organizations, and colleges and universities. Her areas of interest are in education, community organizations, science and technology.

RET Teachers

Julie Alano, Hamilton Southeastern High School, Email

Julie Alano received a BS in Mathematics Education with a minor in Computer Science from Indiana State University. She also received a MS in Educational Technology from Indiana University, Indianapolis. She has been teaching mathematics and computer science for 12 years at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana. She currently teaches AP CS to students from HSE and Fishers High School and introductory courses in CS using VB and C++. Julie also serves as the Digital Age Information Technology Academy (DAITA) chairperson at the school. She oversees the technology education department and the PLTW pre-engineering program. Julie is also the head girls track coach at HSE and serves as the secretary and webmaster of the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

Nancy Lasley, W. H. Harrison High School, Email

Nancy Lasley received her BS and MS from Indiana University in Secondary Mathematics Education. She has been teaching high school mathematics for 27 years. She has been in the mathematics department and the computer science teacher at William Henry Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana, for 22 years. She teaches AP Computer Science A as well as other computer science courses using Alice, Python, and Java. In addition, Nancy has been a lecturer in the Mathematics Department at Purdue University for 10 years.

Honorary Members

Dr. Steve Cooper, Computer Graphics Technology, Email

Dr. Cooper is a Professot of Computer Graphics technology. He has been working on Alice (available from www.alice.org), along with his colleagues Wanda Dann (at CMU) and the late Randy Pausch. Alice is a program visualization tool to better enable novices to learn object-oriented programming. Using the context of animation, students create their own 3D movies and games as they learn to program. His two Alice books, Learning to Program with Alice (Prentice Hall,2008) and Exploring Wonderland (Prentice Hall, 2010), have been well received by his Alice community, which now numbers more than 2500 K-12 and college educators from the US and abroad. He is Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Computer Science Teachers Association, the voice for K-12 educators and education.

Mindy Hart, Computer Science K-12 Outreach Coordinator, Email

Mindy Hart holds licenses as a K-12 teacher and administrator, and spent seven years as a high school computer teacher. As the outreach coordinator for Computer Science, her primary responsibilities are to develop programs that increase interest in and awareness of computer science in the K-12 environment. Mindy serves on the Board of Directors for the Computer Science Teachers Association as an At-Large Representative.

Dr. A.G. Rud, Dean of WSU College of Education, Home, Email

Dr. Rud is the dean of College of Education at Washington State University. He was previously head of the Department of Educational Studies at Purdue. His research interests include the moral dimensions of teaching and learning, philosophy of education, and conceptual issues in higher education. Rud has given numerous workshops on research ethics and the responsible conduct of research. He teaches one of the required teacher education courses, EDST 200 (History and Philosophy of Education), where computational thinking will be incorporated. He is also the editor of Education and Culture, the peer-reviewed international journal of the John Dewey Society.
