These are tips for browsing the internet that are good to practice, no matter how secure (or insecure) your operating system is.

• Do not use Internet Explorer to view web pages
  • Especially Internet Explorer 6, it allows for active x controls and other security holes that are a bigger risk than benefit
    • Microsoft has acknowledged the security risks Internet Explorer 6 has and is pushing for its customers to upgrade: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-10406468-264.html
  • Internet Explorer 8 does a better job of this, but it is also a pain for web developers to write for, be nice to them and use a browser that is compliant with web standards
• Always be sure you trust the source when giving out certain information over the internet such as credit card numbers or social security numbers
  • Make sure the connection the web site is encrypted:
  • Typically these address will start with https, rather than http. (s stands for secured)

• Passwords
  • Change your passwords often
  • Do not tell anyone your password
  • It is best to include numbers alongside letters for a more secure password
  • On sites that require login information do not check the “remember password” or “Stay logged in”

• Open email only from trusted sources
  • Make sure the subject does not look suspicious because people who you know may have a compromised computer and be sending out unwanted email unknowingly
